Easy Win For Driffield
A Leslie Driffield (England) had an easy hurdle in the World Amateur Billiards Championship at the Great Eastern Hotel on Monday night , defeating Burma’s Ameen Yunoos by 1,945 points to 582 .
Maintaining the form and the touch he found in earlier matches , Driffield once again gave a fine all-round display of constructive Billiards . Once a situation was weighed up he scored with customary ease , applying the right amount of strength and “side” to work for position .
The winner had a match average of 37.4 , the number of visits being 52 . In the first session he averaged 48.18 but brought this figure down to 34.6 in the second .
In the first session Driffield strung up six three-figure breaks one of which was a double century . At the half-way stage , when the score stood at 872-256 , he was 188 in play .
On resumption he took his unfinished break to 199 and kept on scoring consistently except in the last 15 minutes when a few blank visits and small items spoilt his average . Driffield’s best break of the night was a fine break of 278 which might have been bigger had he not lost the white at 266 . It took him 21 minutes .
This match marked the conclusion of Yunoos’ engagements . Driffield has one more to play and that is against Marshall , the holder , on Wednesday .
Breaks of 50 and above were :
Driffield : 71 , 109 , 113 , 66 , 124 , 109 , 211 , 199 , 131 , 108 , 53 , 64 , 278 .
