Wilson Jones finds form but too late to avert defeat
Chandra Hirjee regained his title in the National Billiards championship by defeating Wilson Jones, the champion by 3805 points to 3448 in the final at the Great Eastern Hotel on Monday.
It may be mentioned here that Hirjee had won the championship last in 1956.
This was Hirjee’s fourth success in the championship. Previously he had won the title in 1946, 1947 and 1956.3Last year Jones had defeated Hirjee in the final. Thus winning the final Hirjee avenged last year’s defeat.
Hirjee treated the capacity crowd with his fine the top table display. Jones could not find his form excepting last ten minutes. He made stylish breaks in the closing stages which however came too lade to avert a defeat. At the stage Hirjee was leading by 3794 points to 3090. But Jones by making breaks of 114 in his 33rd visit. When the time was called Jones was in play with 98.
First Day’s Play
At the end of the opening day ‘s play Wilson Jones the champion found himself in arrears of 330 points against C. Hirjee , the scores being 1627. Hirjee made a fine break of 307, which he executed in 151/2 minutes on his 4th visit to the table in the first session. The century breaks of either players were: - Hirjee: 307, 115, 151, 171, 145, 146 and 110.
Jones : 100, 130, 102, 129, 135 and 139.
