Lafir In Great Form

National Snooker title holder , M. J. M. Lafir of Ceylon , showed his pace at the Great Eastern Hotel on Sunday night when he defeated former champion T. A. Sadler in three straight frames to reach the semi-final round . The scores were : 103—4 , 67-60 , 71—21 .
Scoring rapidly with crisp , clean strokes , Lafir displayed potting ability of a type that has not been seen in Calcutta for many a year , his cue ball control being as uncanny as his potting was accurate .
In fairness to Sadler it must be said that he luck was badly out , a number of near misses leaving excellent positioning for Lafir , but tactically he was unwise in playing an open game against a player in such devastating form .
This argument can best be appreciated by reflecting on the first frame in which Lafir led by 70 points to one . He took a quick lead of 23 and followed up with a break of 33 consisting of six reds , one brown , two blues , one pink and one black . He soon increased his lead to 78-4 at which stage , with all coloured balls on the table barring the yellow . Saddler conceded the frame . This meant 25 points to Lafir and he won the first frame 103-4 .
Saddler made a more cautious approach to the second frame but there was nothing to suppress Lafir , jumped into a 17-1 lead . Saddler then scored six and opened out the game to profit by five points when Lafir , in cutting the blue , sent the cue ball into a pocket . But Saddler was in trouble again when he sent the cue-ball in while playing a red and Lafir scored a break of 22 to lead 44-12 .
SPORTING CHANCE
Despite being snookered on the blue and hitting the black off the cushion . Saddler still had a chance when he trailed 43-62 , but after sinking the brown he tried a high speed angular cut and left the blue nicely on for Lafir who led 67-47 . Saddler then finished the frame by sinking the pink and the black but he was still seven points ahead .
There was an early tussle in the third frame and it could have gone either way with Lafir leading by 13 points to 11 . Then a lucky double off the brown gave Lafir a break of 16 which seemed to turn the tide in his favour . When all the Reds had gone , Lafir led by 49 points to 16 and things looked a little doubtful for Saddler when he sank the yellow and the green . But nothing could stop Lafir who won
