Jones Sustains Second Defeat
By a Staff Reporter
A.LESLIE Driffield (England) maintained his unbeaten record in the World Amateur Billiards Championship at the Great Eastern Hotel on Saturday night, with an easy victory over India’s No 1, Wilson Jones , by 1,857 points to 700. This was Jones second defeat.
Driffield pierced Jones’ armour plating with clean accurate and stereotyped billiards. He had complete monopoly in both session and rarely did a thing wrong scoring , eight three figure breaks in four hours’ play, three of which were double centuries.
With his opponent striking peak form Jones was completely overwhelmed and could only produce 191 points at the end of two hours to the 1018the English champion had knocked up . The former’s highest break in this session was 91.
Jones improved slightly in the second session and added 509 points to his meagre first- half total. He scored once century break in this period but it was a sweat and toil affair.
The completely one- sided nature of the match makes the story rather easy to tell but while several brilliant strokes were executed , it was not very entertaining to watch one man at the table all the time and the other sitting down. If anyone did enjoy the match it was the winner.
It is hard to analyse Jone’s poor showing . This is the second match in succession in which he has struck an extremely bad patch, and despite the poor luck he had, I must say that in five years, never have I seen him in such a pathetic situation.
Driffield piled up a big lead with three- figure breaks in his third , ninth, eleventh and twelfth visits , and thereafter never looked back. Of Jones’ first ten visits five were blank , his highest being 13, but in his eleventh he rolled out a fairly good 91.
Driffield had a match average of 40.04. He averaged 46.27 in the first session but allowed his effort to flag in the second and averaged only 34.9. the interest in the game evaporated long before the end.
Breaks of 50 and above were :
Driffield : 105,220,221,107,53,56,143,51,220,122,92.
Jones : 91,77,110.
