Little opposition for Jones

India’s Wilson Jones Chalked up his third victory in the World Amateur Billiards Championship, conducted on a league basis, on Monday when he beat Malta’s Wilfred Axiak by 2,456 points to 1,209.
Highlight of the match was Jones’ wonderful touch in the early part of the second session when four visits to the table resulted in the breaks of 146,314,17,438,giving the amazing average of 228.75. A peculiarity of Jone’s game in his last two matches has been the manner in which he pushed his unfinished break at the end of the first session into high scoring figures on resumption . Against Cleary he took an unfinished 77 to 501 on the first night and on the next , the whole game swung in his favour when he carried an unfinished 191 to 287 . Against Axiak he raised 117 to 146 after the interval .
In Monday’s match , Jones proved again that he is a prolific top-of-the-table scorer . He has perfected Postman’s Knock-the pot red and cannon sequence with the white jammed against the top rail-to a nicety . Sometimes it looked as though the break would never end . But Jones broke down on relatively simple shots .
As there was never any doubt about the result of the match , interest waned . Jones , apparently playing with little effort , in the first session quickly ran up a big lead which he maintained to the end .
After his three quick big breaks in the second session , only two other visits of his to the table were entertaining . In the 11th he made 113 and in the 19th , 243—breaks which helped to boost his match average to 53.3 .
In the circumstances , Axiak , who has showed a lot of improvement since his first match in the Championship , did well to record three century breaks , mainly compiled through losing hazard play .
Breaks:
Jones –52 , 160 , 86 , 160 , 74 , 249 , 90 , 146 , 314 , 438 , 133 , 243 .
Axiak –136 , 51 , 135 , 61 , 85 , 70 , 76 , 154 , 89 .
