JONES BEATS HIRJEE BY 1768 POINTS

It was a red letter day for India when Wilson Jones , her second representative in the current World Championship won the World Amateur Billiards title on Thursday night at the Great Eastern Hotel before a packed house to crown the twenty-three years efforts of the Billiards Association and Control Council of India which sent it’s first representative , P. K. Deb , in 1935 to London in it’s quest for World Honours .
This dream was fulfilled when Jones asserted his mastery in no uncertain terms by overwhelming Chandra Hirjee , the National Champion , to the tune of 1768 points , final scores reading 4655 points to 2887 in favour of Jones . And in doing so he emerged out of the World Billiards League as an unbeaten champion having toppled Tom Cleary , the then reigning World Champion . Leslie Driffield , the 1952 unbeaten World Champion as well as the National Champions of Burma and Malta –all in a row .
Great jubiliation followed the announcement of Wilson Jones at 10-36 p.m. as the World Champion for 1958 by Mr. Claude Harris , President of the Australian Billiards Association and Control Council whose Coventry being the defending nation thus officially handed the World Crown to India .
Mr. Harris while felicitating India on her wonderful performance expressed the hope in an interview to our special representative that Jones was quite capable of carrying the Crown in future . He also said that Australia contributed her share in giving valuable experience and encouragement when Jones made a trip to Sydney in 1954 to participate in the World Championship there . Hirjee , Cleary , Driffield and Mr. Begg , the chairman of the BACCI who embraced Jones in congratulating him on his wonderful performance . Garlands from all sides then adorned his neck , the excitement lasting for more an half an hour .
Jones whose performance in the current Championship has been a great improvement over all his past efforts , kept up the machine-like perfection of his stroke-play produced ion his previous matches .
Opening the session (the 3rd one) on a note of caution with a lead of 907 points of the previous night , he steadily forged ahead with breaks of 74 , 70 , 103 , on his first , fourth and tenth visits by which time his lead had topped the 1000 mark scores then reading 2548-1464 in his favour .
Hirjee replied with 162 on the 14th visit reducing the scores to 2566-1678 , then margin being 878 . In this

Jones made other century breaks , 107 , 211 , 111 , 206 and 162 on 15th , 18th , 20th , 22nd , 24th and 27th visits . The break of 206 returned a good time of 10 minutes 10 seconds . Hirjee’s other breaks were 111 on the 25th visit and 117 unfinished on the last visit . The session scores read 3502 (Jones) , 1946 (Hirjee) with Hirjee in play 117 (unfinished) .
in the fourth session , Hirjee played a much improved game making four three-figure breaks to Jones’ three . But the second session which produced the biggest breaks of the Hirjee-Jones encounter was highlighted by a grand break of 371 by Jones on the latter’s 20th visit which continued for seventeen minutes and twenty-seven seconds . Had it not been for Jones hurry in crossing the baulk-line with a difficult red-pot in red-top pocket , the break had every chance of continuing higher-up . The stroke-play of both players , playing a carefree abandon free from the worries of the title was more entertaining than in the previous sessions .
