The Billiards is one of the most scientific games in the world. It is the indoor development of the outdoor game – Bowles. It was derived from lawn bowling in ancient period the players of the lawn bowling were depressed when the inclement weather came and deprived them of pleasure of the game. Eventually a number of them marked off a space on the floor of a big room where they began to play. Quickly it was discovered that boeles were not practical for indoors because of limited playing area. So they built a table with a top somewhat smaller than that which had been the playing area on the floor. Thus Billiards came into existence. Many have called this game as ‘Marble’ game of high grade. The game of carom may be described as the offspring of this game.
The Billiards Association and Control Council of India which came into existence in the year 1931, will manage this year’s championship.
No records are available when the Billiards started in India. However, the old records show that Masers Thurston’s Ltd. Of England sent a table to India to H.E. Sir Malcolm, the then Governor of Bombay in April 1838. The records however that an Indian – h. Vahid won the amateur billiards championship of Great Britain in 1833 He had defeated S. S. Christey by 1500 points to 1395
Many of the world’s games belong to the same speckles as Billiards .
They are : -
French Carom Pin game, shell out Snooker , Man O’ War High – Low jack and game .Bottle, Cowboy, Chicago, 41, pyramid. Eight – ball, Golf, Straight race, Marble, pool and Russian pool.
Robert Marshall who holds 7 World Amateur records is at the top of his form and is fully expected to hold his title. Marshall who is generally considered the finest amateur player of the century, keeps himself superbly physically fit with a daily four mile run.
The only player critics consider capable of upsetting Marshall is Leslie Driffield, the English champion who has impressed tremendously with his repeated three figure breaks during his exhibition games. Driffield mixes his games very well and does not play the top of the table game ti the hilt as some amateurs try without attaining the perfection that is required to play in this most fascinating but difficult style. He can play the top of the table game of course, but prefers to leave the area rather than risk difficult shots. He relies mainly on the all round game and has a gift for recovery shots of exceptional accuracy in position. Besides being a very fine ‘stroke player’, Driffield is an object lesson in concentration.
At present he is at his best as seen by his 444 break which helped him to win the English championship.
Wilson Jones (India) has been steadily improving year after year and his break of 342 against Tom Cleary in the 1950 National Championship was another milestone in the progress of this young Indian player. To his credit he has victories over Frank Edwards and Tom Cleary in competitive Billiards as well as exhibition games. In which he has victories over Marshall and others to his credit. During his stay in England for the 1951 championship he was coached by the World Professional Snooker Champion, Horace Lindrum .
Water Ramage (Scotland) and C. Hirjee (India) are both very good players. The former hearty beat Bob Marshall in the last Championship in London. While Hirjee has to his credit a win over Tom Cleary.
For the first time in the history of billiards in this country, Burma is taking part in the championship. It may not be out of place to mention here that Burma Billiards Association has been formed only this year. A Yunoos won the Burma’s first championship by defeating U. Tin Nynn by 1000 points to 507. The Burmese champion is a hazard player and his highest break so far is 145 . Yesterday (Thursday) he played a practice match with R. Marshall and did fairly well .
Today (Friday) India’s champion , Wilson Jones will meet the Burma champion , A. Yunoos in two sessions—5-30 p.m. and 8-30 p.m. Before the start of the game there will be an opening ceremony , in which the competitors will be accorded a reception .
