Yunoos Gives Improved Display in His Second Match
India’s second stringer , C. Hirjee –since the host country has had the privilege of entering two players –and also the country’s No. 2 in the ranking of the game , experienced little difficulty in beating Ameen Yunoos of Burma by 1876 to 982 points .
Although the scoring in this match was an improvement upon the Jones – Yunoos match on the first day which 2858 as against 2847 points would also corroborate , the standard of billiards was not up to popular expectations . But the fact remained that Yunoos played much improved billiards than he had done in his first match against Wilson Jones .
C. Hirjee had a chequered career in the match . Following a brilliant start as his first fifteen minutes’ play brought him 227 points , Hirjee faded out from the pictuure missing several simple shots incidentally failing to live up to his reputation in off—
Hirjee’s breaks for the match were 79 , 79 , 141 , 56 , 56 , 146 , 230 , 51 , 85 and 180 while Yunoos’s breaks were 67 , 67 , 51 and 61 .
potting . Hirjee , however , had a well compiled 79 which was repeated at the interval of two visits . But his best break of the session—141—was chalked up towards the close in a short span of eight minutes .
Yunoos had a brace of 67 in the opening session and also had 29 in play besides a number of below 50 breaks when the recess intervened .
The Burma Champion’s 29 in play was halted at 33 soon after resumption . Hirjee gave a definitely improved display in the second session when he had three three-figure breaks of 146 , 230 and 180 towards the close . Hirjee’s 230 was compiled in 14 minutes 40 seconds and 180 in 11 minutes 30 seconds . Besides this Hirjee had several low scoring visits and even scoreless visits as well . It appeared that Hirjee was getting a little bit impatient at times and his impetuosity cost him some big scoring breaks .
Yunoos also showed more confidence and better control in his play and shots although he has yet to hit his objective of scoring a century break in the World Billiards Championships .
MONDAY’S GAME
Today the World Champion , Bob Marshall of Australia and also the potential winner of the present championships will make his debut in his encounter against Walter Ramage of Scotland . The match is expected to be very attractive if not one of the best in the present championships .
