Title holder Chandra Hirjee , Bengal’s master cueman , had an easy passage to the quarter- final of the National Billiards Championship at the Great Eastern Hotel on Monday night . In the opening match he accounted for the madras player C. D. SHAH by 2356 points to 844 in four hours.
Hirjee s form compared with the high standard he reached last year could not be gauged from this match since he was never extended but he treated the crowd nevertheless to an excellent display of all - round billiards, specializing as usual in top- table play.
Shah was a game loser and unperturbed by Hirjee s scoring rate, he pegged away steadily , catching the eye with the occasional clever shot, but he lacked the constructive ability shown by Hirjee and fell further and further into arrears as the game progressed.
Hirjee was not particularly fluent at the start and it was not until his ninth visit that he knocked up 59 following this with a smart break of 88 . Shortly after an hours play Hirjee found his real touch and made a break of 127,complied mainly at the top of the table. This lead was achieved in the 30th visit and at the half way stage he led by 1139 points to 344.
Both players improved after the interval. Hirjee rate being enhanced by three quick breaks over 30. He was at his peak in the 30th visit of this session when he chalked up a sparkling break of 202 and went on and on to lead by over a thousand points.
The champion became more devastating as the end drew near and figured in three big breaks. One of three figures which involved the pot red and cannon combination at the top of the table and postman’s knock with the white jammed against the top roll.
The champion’s next opponent will be M. J. M. Lafir of Ceylon who incidentally , holds the National Snooker title.
Hirjee’s best breaks were :
First session—59,88,127,66,58,82,
Second session ---- 59, 67, 55, 202,70,160,70 and 45 (unfinished).
Shah’s best break of the night was 46.
