Jones Goes Down To Hirjee

India s No. 1. Wilson Jones, trailed second string Chandra Hirjee all the way in the World Amateur Billiards Championship at the Great Eastern Hotel on Tuesday, the score in the four- hour match being 1,848 to 1,267 in favour of Hirjee.

Hirjee has won three of his four matches so far and has to meet Scotland ‘ s Walter Ramage to complete his engagements . His only defeat was sustained against Driffield.
It was a fairly entertaining match to watch as both exponents are basically top- table players and neither wasted time in getting down to break building . On the day’s play Hirjee was more consistent and deserved to win.
Jones scored more fluently than he did in his previous matches but has not yet fought his way out of the bad patch he seems to have struck recently. In four matches he has only one win and only has to play Marshall to complete his fixtures.
Hirjee got off to a quick start and scoring breaks of 87, 51, 52 and 80 in his first four visits he built up a fairly big lead . Jones got going in his fifth visit with a break of 90 but Hirjee improved his position with a big break of 207 aided by some luck at 118 when the red disappeared into a pocket after he had missed an easy cannon off a side cushion .
Late in the second hour play slowed up a little as both players resorted to safety first tactics, each baulking the other. Jones gradually began to creep up and got nearly 100 points behind but Hirjee was away again at the break. The score was 802 to 725 with Hirjee 31 in play.
On resumption Hirjee took his unfinished break to 88 and followed up with 90 and 84 to lead 1,120- 806. he then strung together quick breaks of 51, 97, 83 and 57 and followed this run with a break of 206 in his 30th visit which took him 13 minutes .
Jones’s best effort in this session was 117 scored in his 32nd visit.
Driffield who has won all his four matches, today faces a stiff task in his match with Marshall which should have an important bearing on the championship.
Breaks of 50 and above were :
Hirjee: of 87, 51, 52, 80, 207, 91, 88., 90, 84, 51, 97, 83, 57, 206.
Jones: 90, 53, 89, 81, 52, 60, 58, 117.
