With the arrival of the Maltese champion . Wilfred Axiak , on Tuesday the contingent of six competitors for the world amateur billiards championship commencing at the great eastern hotel , Calcutta , on Thursday , was complete. Australia’s Tom Cleary , one of the finest exponents of top–table play , is here in own right as the holder of the title . apart from that he represents his country as national champion having won the title in September this year when he defeated ossie pitman in the final . former world champion Bob Marshall did not participate .
Representing England is Leslie Driffield . who won the world title when the championship was held in 1952 . he was unable to go to Sydney to defend this title in 1954 – the year of Cleary ‘s triumph – but comes back into the world event by virtue of having won the English title in February this year .he defeated Jack Wright in the national final . during practice on Tuesday morning Driffield made a break of 236 .
As the host country India is entitled to two entrants and the representatives are reigning national champion . Chandra Hirjee , and Bombay s Wilson Jones who , apart from is big monopoly over the national title , has represented India in the world championship in 1951 .1952 and 1954 . Chandra Hirjee who has been Jone's only rival for national honours during the past few years , represented India in the world event of 1952 . although India was allowed to send two representatives to Australia for the 1954 championship . Hirjee withdrew owing to unavoidable circumstances and Jones went on alone .
Wilfred Axiak has been champion of Malta for the past eight years .he believes that top – table play is the only means of break building but has not yet perfected this technique in private life he is a sports journalist and is thoroughly happy in his work . Maung Hman has been Burmese champion for the last two years and is believed to be a player of high promise .
